Hematite was used as the main pigment in prehispanic Mexico due to its accessibility and versatility. The color represented cardinal points in the universe, blood, fire… vitality. Its presence in textiles, buildings and even buried bodies is evidence of its importance for Mesoamerican cultures and their rituals and ceremonies. Hematite invokes Tezcatlipoca, god of war; Tonatiuh, the father sun and Xiuhtecuhtli, god of fire. The pigment, made of iron oxide is found in the same earth that gives life and buries it. It is the color of creation, coursing through the bodies of every man and woman, through the core of our planet, inside the ambers of a glowing fire… it is the color of the heart of the universe.
