When the king made a trip to Xibalba or the Other World, his Wayob, or companion spirit, accompanied him. Classic Maya Wayob images appeared in many forms, including human forms. The Mayans thought that powerful humans had special soul ties with gods or animals. Wayobs were also considered dark entities, that is, a person who can transform into an animal while sleeping to do harm. Darkness was normal for the Mayans, they knew it was a normal polarization of the universe, so this was also part of their culture.
